1. Curtain Holdback Solutions
Styling your living room so it reflects your glowing personality is best displayed in the detail. Curtain solutions are a solid starting point and they can be tackled quickly to make a big impact. Re-purpose your old necklaces to make the perfect curtain tie backs. If you have an old rhinestone necklace sitting around, simply attach a hook to the wall and use it to keep the curtains pulled to the side in style.
2. Curtain Hangers
Hanging curtains can be a challenge, especially if you have no desire to drill into the wall. Whether you rent a home or you just do not want to damage the walls, simply use utility hooks to support your curtain rods. These damage-free hooks come in a wide variety of shapes, styles, and sizes so you are sure to find the perfect touch for your space. The varying finishes make it easy for you to find hooks that match your existing rods.
3. Small Item Storage Solution
Creatively hide remotes or small items out of sight using old book bindings. Living room DIYhacks like this can give your old books a new purpose. If you don’t have any books you want to part with, you can use a binder or the binding from a photo album. An inexpensive one can be purchased at any store for under $5.
4. Stylish Coffee Table
Another great way to add a stylish touch to any living room is creating your own coffee table. Take a plain one and add pallet woods or 2x6s across the top to give it a more rustic, barn-like appearance. Paint the old coffee table white and stain the newly added wood strips for a more rustic appearance. You can also go bold by painting the table black, then use a dark stain on the wood strips. A matte or high gloss finish will emphasize this beautiful piece, making it stand out among the rest of your furniture. Continue this theme throughout your space by adding pallet strips or 2x6s to the top of old coffee and sofa tables.
5. An ottoman to accent any area
Repurpose an old end or coffee table to make the perfect ottoman for your space. Cut around 4-inches from each leg of the table, then add padding to the top surface. Sew an attractive cover for the ottoman to match your furniture or create a standalone piece that sticks out from the rest. Another suggestion for a DIY ottoman would be this amazing DIY crochet floor pouf.
6. Window bench with storage
Turn an old bookshelf into a comfortable storage bench. The Kallax shelving unit from Ikea is ideal for this project; however, there are numerous companies who offer affordable alternatives that will work just as well. Attach 4″ legs to the side of the bookshelf in order to elevate the bench to the perfect height. Cut an MDF board to the size of the bookshelf and attach foam to the board. Simply create an attractive cover for the bench using your favorite textile and place the bench along the wall. You do not need to sew for this — simply lay the fabric flat on the ground and place the MDF, foam side down, over the fabric. Fold the fabric over and use a staple gun to secure the fabric to the board. Next, just lay the covered seat over the bookshelf and you have a perfect seat for guests. For enclosed storage, insert fabric, wood or plastic storage boxes into the shelf openings.
7. Blanket Holder / Display
This simple project creates a huge impact on your living room. Take an old wooden ladder and lean it against any wall in the room. If you have pets or small children in the area, use single hinges to secure the ladder top to the wall so it does not fall over. Drape your favorite blankets or quilts over the ladder steps. Not only will this solution add a bit of color to your space, you can swap out the blankets at any time to create an entirely new look. The best part about this is a warm blanket is always within reach for you to cozy up on the sofa after a long day.
8. Focus on Flooring
Add a bold touch of texture to any space by layering multiple area rugs on top of each other. Choose a large base area rug then add smaller rugs on top. Use animal theme rugs or misshaped rugs to add a more interesting touch. The various layers of style, color and texture will add an ideal balance of warmth to your living room. Adding various area rugs is extremely beneficial to any living room because of the major impact it can have in any size room. This is also a great way to tie mismatched furniture together in your room. Offsetting area rugs across a living room can benefit small spaces by making them seem more elongated.
9. Creative display solution
For a country theme living room, use a tractor or small car tire as a plant holder for your space. Paint the tire a bold color and stand it upright. Attach rope to the top for hanging, or simply rely on wall hooks to secure the tire in place. Add soil to the base of the tire and add your favorite draping plants. Hang the tire on the wall and admire the beauty it now displays. If live plants are not something you are interested in, you can add foam holders and fake plants in the tire as well. Another option is to add wood three wood shelves inside the tire to display small items are decorative pieces. The tire acts as a shadow box to provide beauty and support to fragile items.
10. Mason jar decorations
Mason jars can be used throughout the living room in a variety of ways, creating the perfect finishing touch. Wrap mason jars in rope to place on tables and shelves for candle holders or vases. A larger piece can be made using four mason jars side-by-side. Take four basic jars and paint them to match your space. Line all four jars on a table or shelf and add candles or flowers to the jars.
