You probably have never heard of the ‘Duke of Lancaster ship’, but it was quite impressive back in the day and now…well…it’s almost equally as impressive, just in a creepy sort of way.

The ship was originally a cruise liner in the 1950s, traveling thousands of miles across the oceans. It was one of the last passenger-only steamers built for British Railways, and was designed to be both a ferry and a cruise ship.

Ten years after the ships first voyage, the DOL began seeing a decline in business as a ferry, as car ferries began to rise in popularity. British Railways made the decision to convert the ship from a dual-use vessel to strictly a cruise ship. The ship was remodeled, and could now accommodate 1200 people, 105 cars, and 400 cabin accommodations.

The ship was functional from 1956-1979, when it sailed its final journey. The ship ended up retiring in North Wales, where many thought of the ship as “The Fun Ship”.  People could visit the ship and check out a bit of history. However, met with many legal battles, the business closed during the mid 1980’s.

Although the ship was closed off to the public, the owner – John Rowley, allowed street artists ‘taggers’ to use the ship as a massive canvas. Only a handful of people have ever been let inside however.

Recently, a group of people were allowed inside with cameras and what they found was pretty creepy…and pretty awesome!

Once you step inside the ship you immediately turn the clock back to 1979.
