Green Day was playing a sold-out show to a St. Patrick’s Day crowd at Worcester’s DCU Center on Friday when frontman Billie Joe Armstrong called for volunteer guitarists for their next song.

“All you need to know is three chords and that’s it,” a Youtube video shows Armstrong announcing to an audience of eager fans with their hands raised. “Three chords, and that’s it. You don’t even have to be good.”

A video posted to Youtube then shows the volunteer crowd surf to the front of the stage. After a high-five and a hug, Armstrong shows the young fan how to play the chords for the band’s next song, “Knowledge.”

The kid – who introduced himself as Grant from Rutland, Massachusetts — got to keep the guitar he used for the performance.

This was certainly a once in a lifetime opportunity for Grant and he was clearly super duper stoked!
