Since their inception ten years ago, iPhones have been consistently placed among the top smartphones on the market, and with every new release has come overwhelming praise from critics and fans alike.

However, buyers looking to get the most out of their iPhone who expect nothing less than perfection from their expensive new iPhones often end up disappointed, or at least dissatisfied. If you’re an iPhone owner, you’ve probably already experienced functionality problems like unresponsive screens, random reboots, failed software updates, and so on. Some issues tend to go away on their own, but others will persist even after restarting t

Although calling tech support may be your only choice when things go wrong, you can remedy many iPhone hiccups yourself, sometimes with little to no effort. Below are some common problems, along with what to do when they plague your phone.

1. Battery

iPhones rarely exhibit battery issues, but when they do, it’s very frustrating. The problem may sometimes stem from bad charging habits, as well as using illegitimate plugs and cables, but, in most cases, it’s the software that carries the blame.

If your battery life suddenly starts acting up, the first place to investigate is your app collection. Make use of the Battery Usage tool in Settings, which will show you what apps are hogging up the battery. If you see something odd, try fetching a newer release from the App Store or reinstalling the application. Similarly, if you suspect a recent iOS upgrade to be the cause of the rapid battery drain, consider downgrading to your previous version, at least until Apple releases the next update.

Other measures you can take to improve battery life include using Low Power mode, toggling Airplane mode, disabling iCloud keychain, limiting background app activity, and adjusting your display. And, if all else fails, restoring your iPhone to factory default settings will almost certainly do the trick.

2. Performance

As iPhones have persistently shown, even the best smartphones are not immune to performance hiccups. Virtually all smartphones aside from the very latest experience random slowdowns and sluggishness once in awhile. The issue may only be momentary, but if it recurs a bunch of times, these troubleshooting methods may speed things up.

Start by investigating recently installed applications and if you suspect one to be the culprit, remove it. Also, check App Store reviews for feedback regarding the app as other users could be having the same problem. Moreover, outdated apps can sometimes cause performance issues so ensure all your applications are up to date.

If your apps seem fine, turn to Settings. Resetting all settings almost always fixes the problem, but if your phone is still slow afterwards, the next level solution is a complete system reset. Sometimes starting from scratch is all an iPhone needs. To avoid losing your data, however, ensure you make a backup before wiping the phone clean.

Lastly, iPhone slowdowns are prevalent with new iOS updates due to a variety of upgrade challenges. Installing recently released software on an older device, for example, will probably affect performance. Luckily, Apple allows users to go back to a previous version for a limited time.

3. Apps

iPhone users are known to be exceedingly vocal about app issues. If the performance of one or all your apps suddenly takes a hit, don’t panic. There are a few things you can try before deeming the situation hopeless.

First, make sure all your applications are up to date. App developers are constantly releasing new builds which, in addition to interface changes and upgraded features, come with loads of bug fixes and stability improvements. If you update iOS and an app starts to misbehave, installing a newer version of the app will likely fix the problem.

To keep your phone running only the latest apps, turn on automatic App Store updates.

4. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

Shaky wireless connectivity is a problem that iPhone users encounter every day. Complaints often are about slow speeds, but sometimes, the phone’s Wi-Fi or Bluetooth can simply stop working.

If you’re confident that your Router is working fine, the first move to take is reset your iPhone’s network settings, which you can do by choosing Reset, then Reset Network Settings in the General Settings section. You’ll need both your passcode and your Wi-Fi password for a successful reset.

If that doesn’t help, try forgetting your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth networks and attempt to reconnect. You could also turn off Wi-Fi Networking in System Services, located in the Location Services section of the phone’s Privacy settings. If none of these solutions works, head back to Reset and this time select Reset All Settings.

5. Heat

iPhones, like all smartphones, get warm when charging or handling demanding tasks like gaming or HD streaming. And, although users often complain of overheating, it’s usually nothing alarming. If your phone gets too hot to touch, however, it should be cause for alarm.

Simple steps like removing a case or prompting a restart often cool things down. If the phone heats up excessively when charging, unplug it and give it a few minutes to cool down. You could also try another charger, cable or power outlet.

Random overheating could result from a problem with the software or apps. Try a factory reset, and verify the problem is gone before restoring a backup. On the other hand, the cause may be hardware-related. If resetting doesn’t work, it’s time to pay your nearby Apple Store a visit.

Users experience many iPhone issues, but although some may be serious, you shouldn’t just rush over to the Genius Bar every time an app freezes, or you lose Wi-Fi connection. Instead, take the time to examine the issue. And even if you don’t find a fix yourself, the information you gather will probably help a Genius diagnose the problem faster.
