PostmodernJukebox, the jazz group formed by talented jazz pianist Scott Bradlee, is back once again with another cover of a popular song interpreted in their trademark vintage jazz-inspired sound. The group, which has nearly 1.5 million subscribers and over 284 million views on their YouTube channel, has previously had huge viral hits with their jazzy versions of songs like Radiohead’s “Creep” and Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Bass,” just released their version of the iconic White Stripes hit, “Seven Nation Army.”
Jack White, lead singer of The White Stripes, says the title came from his childhood mispronunciation of Salvation Army, and the title was a placeholder for the riff before any lyrics were ever written. The song features a simple riff repeated throughout that has since taken on a life of its own.
The signature riff is now being used at sporting events around the globe as a way to hype up fans and athletes. The melody sung and chanted by thousands of people from football fans in Baltimore all the way to soccer fans in Europe (especially Italy) and cricket fans in India, many of whom will likely never even know where it originated.
