The Slow Mo Guys, Gavin and Dan, have done lots of crazy things in the name of, well, slow-mo. This time, they’re smashing a mirror with a hammer, and it’s pretty damn interesting for one major reason: an uncanny similarity to a scene in The Matrix.
At the start of the clip, the guys gear up for the experiment. “Glass breaks rapidly, so it won’t be a high-res one,” Gavin says. “We’re going to shoot low at 120,000 frames per second.”
With that, Dan chucks a hammer at the mirror, and it cleanly hurtles through the glass, effectively breaking it.
Around the 1:20 mark, the guys slow down the shot to the designated 120,000 FPS. “Is it stopped?” Dan asks in bewilderment. “It barely looks like it’s moving,” Gavin says.
At about 1:28, the hammer makes contact with the mirror. “Oh, God! Did you see that shockwave?” Dan asks.
And indeed, in the next frame-by-frame, an actual shockwave appears to ripple through the glass just before cracking.
So cool! We just love the Slow Mo Guys!
