A teenager’s first high school dance is a big deal. The roller coaster of emotions that you go through from the time you first ask someone to the dance, to getting ready, to actually attending the dance is an amazing experience.

For 15-year-old AJ Spader, his high school’s winter formal was the first opportunity he’d ever had to ask a girl out on a date. But, instead of going with someone from his grade, AJ decided to take a more nontraditional date: his sister. While everyone was pairing up with whoever they had a crush on, AJ asked his 10-year-old sister, Rebekah, to be his date for the evening.

AJ’s sister Rebekah is currently battling cancer, and doctors have told her family that she most likely won’t make it to high school. Wanting to spend as much time with her as he could, AJ set out to give his little sister an evening she’ll never forget. According to their mother, the whole thing was AJ’s idea. In an interview with ABC, she said “He came to us and said, ‘Rebekah might not get to go to her own dance.'” So, he made sure she got one. From hair and makeup to dinner and dancing, AJ and Rebekah’s night had everything you could ever want in a high school dance.

If you’re wondering whether or not Rebekah had a good time, her laughter and her smile leave no room for doubt. The Spader family knows that they don’t have much time left with their beloved sister and daughter, but that isn’t stopping them from making memories while she’s still here.

This is such an incredible story that has so many incredible variables that deserves to be shared:-)
