When Donald Ritchie was younger and in the Navy, he as assigned as a ‘lookout’ and he has never stopped looking out for people ever since.

Donald moved to a piece of property in Australia where his front yard offers a stunning view of the ocean waters. Just across the street from his driveway lies a massive cliff, coined ‘The Gap’, which offers a gorgeous view of the crashing waves below as well as passing boats and ships. This cliff also offers a very easy place for individuals to take their own lives by jumping.

Donald moved to the property when he was just 35-years-old, now in his 80’s, Donald has saved countless people from committed suicide at The Gap. As a lookout, Donald often gazes out his front window looking for any suspicious looking situation. He can usually tell when someone is in distress and when he sees them, he head across the street offer kind words and a smile.

Donald’s wife once asked him what he says to the people he talks to at The Gap. He states ‘I sell them life’.

In all, official reports claim Donald saved 160 people from ending their lives to early. Unofficial reports put that number around 400. Although Donald was unable to save them all, he surely impacted many, many people and will continue to do so.

Often times Donald would talk someone away from the cliff’s edge and invite them into his home where his wife would prepare dinner for them all. Such an incredible gesture by a very, very kind soul.
