This may seem hilarious until it happens to you: You are crossing a street together with other pedestrians, when suddenly you find yourself alone in the middle of the street with oncoming traffic headed your way. New Yorkers walk faster than you and will make it safely to the other side. You may not be so lucky. So, keep your wits about you, and follow traffic signs and lights. And no, pedestrians do not always have the right of way in New York. Though motorists are obligated to avoid collisions, they have the right of way following what the traffic lights indicate. In a crosswalk with a traffic signal, pedestrians are supposed to obey the pedestrian signal. Pedestrians should also watch out for people on bikes. Even in a group of crossing people, you can get hit by a cyclist rushing to get to somewhere.
