Don’t Hesitate To Ask For Directions

You could easily get lost in New York City, with so many streets, subways, and corners that look the same. Don’t be ashamed to look like a tourist. Locals know what a tourist looks like and asking for directions is never a bad thing. If you’re confused figuring your map while staring at it, you’re probably stuck standing somewhere (hopefully not blocking a sidewalk). Locals would be happy to give you directions and get you moving on your way. It may seem awkward to ask for directions from someone in a rush… so look for a cop or a store helper, and they will gladly assist you. It’s also a great idea to ask people who are walking dogs or pushing baby strollers because they most likely live in the area and can easily point you to the right direction. Generally, most locals are happy to provide directions and even make recommendations as long as you approach them with respect. Don’t bother with small talk either—if you’re lost, don’t burden the locals with a lengthy explanation but just tell them exactly where you want to go.
