It may be surprising since New York is a financial center, but do not rely solely on credit cards. Some places only accept cash, for reasons known to them only. Several of the city’s smaller businesses, restaurants, and bars don’t accept debit or credit card payments. Some establishments don’t have a credit card machine at the register but have a high-fee ATM with a costly charge for withdrawals. And while there are many banks and ATMs in the city, you don’t want to risk finding yourself without money to pay for a meal or service. Also be ready to give cash tips to servers, cab or Uber drivers, and street performers. You don’t have to bring much cash on you, just enough to get you through your day without any problem.
