Portugal is a very popular European travel destination and a gorgeous country to explore. Portugal is well-known for beach vacations, but there’s so much more to this country than simply the sand and the sea. There are tons of historic cities to explore, stunning National Parks and gorgeous cuisine that will leave you wanting more. For many visitors to Portugal, one of the best parts of this country is how diverse and different all the destinations are. It’s not uncommon to travel just thirty minutes away and feel like you are in a completely different country. Amarante:

Located close to Porto in the north of Portugal, Amarante is a fantastic place to be if you want to explore some of the history and heritage of the gorgeous region. Be sure to visit the stunning arched bridge at Ponte Sao Goncalo, and walk along the riverside route where you can find loads of beautiful independent cafes and restaurants serving up tasty dishes and delectable sweet treats.

Sortelha:

Often referred to as the Medieval village that time forgot, Sortelha is a tiny Portuguese village that is home to a stunning castle overlooking the region. The castle grounds are huge and perfect to spend a few hours exploring; be sure to pack your comfortable walking shoes for this adventure. Wander around the village and feel like you have been transported right back to Medieval times. It’s a popular destination choice for those who visit Portugal on a group tour.

Sintra:

Nestled within the Sintra Mountains, it’s really not difficult to visit Sintra and fall completely in love. This region has some of the most beautiful castles on the continent, and in a prime location just half an hour or so from the center of Lisbon, it’s really easy to add Sintra to your itinerary and plan a day trip from the capital. There are several stunning UNESCO World Heritage Sites to explore here including Monserrate Palace, Pena Palace, and Castle of the Moors which are just too gorgeous to miss out on.

The Azores:

Sitting in the mid-Atlantic Ocean, the Azores is a stunning volcanic archipelago that simply can’t be missed. It will take you a little longer to get here since you will need to travel there by plane or boat, but it’s well worth the journey to see one of the most dramatic sets of islands in Europe. There are some really stunning natural landscapes, trails, and breathtaking scenery that you will never forget.

Lagos:

Take the Lisbon to Lagos train route and visit this small town perched on Portugal’s southern coast in the gorgeous Algarve region. Be sure to visit the stunning cliffs of Ponta de Piedade, and the gorgeous, ornate Igreja de Santo Antonio. Lagos Castle is also a must-see for anybody visiting this area.
