Inventions have changed the course of history, often in unexpected ways. Check out these five fascinating facts about some of the world’s most iconic inventions:

1. The light bulb

Thomas Edison didn’t invent the light bulb, but he perfected it. In 1879, he created the first practical, long-lasting version of the electric light, revolutionizing the way we live after dark.

2. The telephone
While Alexander Graham Bell is credited with inventing the telephone, it’s said that Elisha Gray filed a patent for a similar device on the same day. Their rivalry led to one of the most famous patent disputes in history.

3. Post-it Notes
Post-it Notes were invented by accident. 3M scientist Spencer Silver was trying to create a super-strong adhesive but ended up with a low-tack version, which eventually became the basis for Post-it Notes in 1977.

4. The microwave
The microwave oven was discovered by Percy Spencer in 1945 while working on radar technology. He noticed that a chocolate bar in his pocket had melted due to radar waves—leading to the microwave’s invention.

5. The zipper
The zipper was patented in 1913 by Gideon Sundback. Before that, buttons and hooks were commonly used for fastening clothes. Sundback’s improved version made zippers reliable and popular in everyday fashion.
