Here are some interesting facts about GALAXIES!

Galaxies are mind-blowingly vast and filled with wonders that are out of this world! Here are five super fun and true facts about galaxies that will make you look at the night sky a little differently.

1. There are over 2 trillion galaxies

Yup, you read that right—2 trillion. Scientists estimate that there are more than 2 trillion galaxies in the observable universe. Each one is home to billions of stars, planets, and mysteries waiting to be uncovered!

2. Our galaxy is on a collision course

Don’t worry—it’s not happening tomorrow! But the Milky Way is on track to collide with the Andromeda Galaxy in about 4 billion years. When they meet, they’ll form a new, larger galaxy, but luckily, the stars inside won’t actually collide.

3. Some galaxies are “dead”

Certain galaxies, like the well-known “red and dead” ones, have stopped forming new stars and are running out of gas. These galaxies are old and no longer active in terms of star creation—kind of like the universe’s version of a senior center.

4. Galaxies can have supermassive black holes

At the center of most large galaxies, including the Milky Way, there’s a supermassive black hole with a mass millions or even billions of times that of our Sun. These cosmic giants can swallow stars, gas, and even light!

5. Some galaxies are moving away faster than light

Because the universe is expanding, galaxies can move away from us at speeds greater than the speed of light. This doesn’t violate physics because it’s space itself expanding, not the galaxies moving through space.

The universe is constantly surprising us, and each new discovery about galaxies helps us understand the vast, mysterious cosmos just a little bit more!
