Here are some interesting facts about the beloved the WEDDING PROPOSAL!

Get down on one knee! Proposing has come a long way from whispering intentions to a village elder. These days, it can be anything from skywriting to TikTok-worthy flash mobs—but the traditions behind proposals are full of fun twists.

1. Getting down on one knee? That’s knight behavior.

The whole “kneeling to propose” thing may have medieval roots—knights knelt before lords and ladies to pledge loyalty. Romantic gestures with royal flair? Yes, please.

2. February 29th proposals are a leap of tradition.

According to folklore, women in parts of Europe could propose to men on Leap Day—a tradition that dates back to the 5th century. And if the guy said no? He was supposed to buy her gloves or a silk dress. Win-win.

3. Some cultures proposed with locks of hair.

In Victorian times, a suitor might give a ring containing a lock of his beloved’s hair. Kind of sweet… kind of serial killer vibes. Let’s call it “historically intimate.”

4. The first filmed proposal happened in 1896.

Yes, that long ago! Thomas Edison’s company filmed “The Kiss,” a reenactment of a proposal and wedding kiss, and it was considered super scandalous at the time. (Scandalous = people kissed on the mouth.)

5. Flash mob proposals peaked in the 2010s.

The ultimate “extra” move? Flash mobs. By 2012, these public dance-and-propose events were everywhere—mall food courts, airports, even underwater. Millennials did not come to play.

Whether it’s medieval kneeling or modern-day flash mobs, proposals prove that love has always been a little dramatic—and a whole lot of fun.
