Here are some interesting facts about RAIN!
Rain, rain, don’t go away just yet—we have 5 fun and fascinating facts about you! Rain gets a bad rap for ruining hair days and picnics, but it’s honestly one of the coolest natural phenomena out there. Beyond umbrellas and puddles, rain has a ton of wild, wonderful science behind it—and even some intergalactic flair.
1. Raindrops don’t actually look like teardrops
Surprise! Despite how they’re drawn in cartoons, real raindrops start out spherical. As they fall, air pressure flattens them into more of a jellybean or hamburger bun shape. Teardrops? That’s just artistic license.
2. The smell of rain has a name
That earthy scent after it rains? It’s called petrichor. It comes from plant oils and a soil-loving bacteria called actinomycetes. When rain hits the ground, it releases those compounds into the air—and boom: that fresh, nostalgic smell.
3. It can rain animals (yes, really)
There have been actual reports of raining frogs, fish, and even spiders. This bizarre weather trick happens when strong winds or waterspouts suck up small animals and drop them miles away. Nature’s weird like that.
4. The heaviest rain ever recorded happened in India
In July 1861, the town of Cherrapunji in India recorded almost 40 inches of rain in a single day. It’s still one of the wettest places on Earth, and the record hasn’t been broken since.
5. It rains on other planets—just not like here
On Venus, it rains sulfuric acid (ouch), and on Saturn’s moon Titan, it rains liquid methane. Definitely not the kind of weather you want to forget your raincoat in.
So next time it rains, don’t just dash inside—look up and appreciate the wild science pouring down.
