Here are some interesting (and a tad obscure!) facts about Christmas traditions from around the world!
1. Japan celebrates Christmas with KFC – In Japan, eating KFC for Christmas is a beloved tradition. Due to a successful marketing campaign in the 1970s, many families now order fried chicken for Christmas dinner. It’s so popular that people often place their orders months in advance!
2. Finland’s “Christmas sauna” tradition – In Finland, it’s customary to relax in a sauna on Christmas Eve before the holiday festivities. Families gather to cleanse both their bodies and minds in preparation for the holiday celebrations. It’s a calming ritual to usher in the season.
3. Iceland’s “Yule Lads” – Instead of one Santa, Iceland has 13 “Yule Lads” who visit children in the 13 days leading up to Christmas. Each lad has a distinct personality—like the “Spoon Licker” or “Door Slammer”—and they leave gifts in shoes placed by the children.
4. Mexico’s “Las Posadas” – This Christmas tradition recreates Mary and Joseph’s search for shelter in Bethlehem. Families go door-to-door in a procession, singing carols until they are “let in,” symbolizing the couple’s search for refuge.
5. Ukraine’s Christmas spider – In Ukraine, decorating Christmas trees with spider webs is considered good luck. This tradition comes from an old folk tale where a spider helped decorate a poor family’s tree by weaving beautiful webs.
