In recent years, coconut oil has sprung to the top of the list when it comes to an all natural supplement. Coconut oil has many excellent health benefits, both internally and externally.

Using coconut oil in your hair is starting to catch on here in the U.S.. This practice is already widely popular in India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia, Burma, Philippines and the Caribbean.

Here is why using coconut oil in your hair is beneficial :

1. Prevents Hair Loss

While inflammatory skin conditions, fungal infection and nutrient deficiency can by the reason for hair loss, coconut oil with all of it’s healthy fats will nourish the hair shaft and the scalp. It will reduce inflammation while fighting skin infection.

You take 2 tbsp of sage oil and 3 tbsp of coconut oil. Then cook it over low heat, combining the two. Let cool, and try it out on your hand. Make sure it’s warm and not burning. Now, apply all over your head before bed and cover it up with a shower cap. Wash out in the morning.

 

2. Repairs Hair Damage

The best natural oil for hair damage prevention? That would be coconut oil! Better than both mineral oil and sunflower oil. It also reduces loss of protein while strengthens the shaft. Split end repair can be performed as well with coconut oil.

 

3. Makes Your Hair Smooth

Have frizzy hair? Usually this is because of overly dry conditions of the cuticles and the hair shaft. Coconut oil to the rescue. It’s hydrophobic which enables it to retain moisture in the hair shaft while also repelling water.
You apply the oil 10-15 minutes before washing your hair and it will result in smooth and silky hair. You can also use coconut oil for styling as it will tame down those flyaway hairs.

 

4. Fights Dandruff

A very common problem for a lot of people. How to get rid of that dandruff? Coconut oil fights fungal infection and hydrates dry skin, both of which are dandruff culprits.
Take equal parts coconut oil and castor oil, then massage into the scalp and leave in for 30 minutes. Then wash it out. For severe dandruff sufferers, do this every time you wash your hair.

 

5. Kills Lice

A nasty and common problem, especially with kids. And the lice treatments can equally be nasty as they are harsh on the scalp while containing chemicals.

You can use coconut oil effectively to treat lice as it hydrates the skin, rather than irritating it. Supposedly it will even work to get rid of pesticide-resistant lice!

It essentially chokes out the lice by smothering it, while preventing it from laying down any eggs.

Apply the oil to the hair and leave in for several days. Continue to apply more as absorption takes place. You can also add in some tea tree oil to increase potency.

 

6. Gray Hair

So how does coconut oil deal with the gray? At the base of each hair follicle are pigment cells. These are responsible for the color of you hair, but when you get older these end up dying.

By putting coconut oil on your hair, you keep it healthy and prevent the pigment cell die out from happening.
Massage your hair with the oil and some lemon, 15 minutes a day, everyday.
