In lieu of minimalism and making use of what you already have, here are some DIY hacks to easily upcycle old clothing to help save the environment in more ways than one. Whether it is too big, or too tight, or it is a damaged piece of clothing, try upcycling it instead of throwing it away.

1. Clothing has stretched, or it is too big to wear: Wear the piece in a different manner and style such as a gigantic sweater paired with a belt, or a comfortable hoodie for winter nights.

2. Clothing has become to tight to wear: If you have some pieces that no longer fit, a solution to putting them to good use is to sew it as another piece of clothing such as a cardigan, or sweater. You can also creatively add another fabric such as lace to extend a dress or top.

3. Make something new out of your old pieces: Turn your beloved dress into a skirt, or repurpose your old flannel shirts into a headress.

4. Cover up stains or holes: Sewing embellishments, buttons and pins can add an extra flair for those clothes that have been tested through time to cover up some stains or holes they have endured.

5. Upcycle it to other useful things that serve as memories: You don’t have to keep using your old clothes for the same reason. You can change it up and update them to other things you might need, like quilts, tablecloths, napkins and coasters, among others.
