Say you are gone for a few days and your home loses power. This can be a big issue for the food in your freezer. With no power, your food will thaw out and if power is out for too long…your food may not be good to eat when you get back. The kicker is, you may not even know it! So by using this simple trick, you will be able to tell just how long you were without power and if the food in your freezer is still good to eat. Eating food that has thawed and then froze again can be life threatening because the food may spread salmonella and other bacteria.

The food in your fridge can stay safe for up to four hours without power, as long as the door isn’t opened. The food in your freezer can stay good for up to 48-hours if the freezer is full. If the freezer is half full, your food will only last 24-hours.

To ensure that you know how long power was out and if your food is good to eat, you simply do the following.

Fill a cup with water and place it in the freezer. Once the water is frozen, place a coin on top of the ice. When you return home, if the coin is still on top of the ice…you didn’t lose power. If the coin is down in the ice a little ways…you lost power for a short while. If the coin is at the bottom of the cup…you are going to want to throw away all of the food in the freezer, as you have lost power for a considerable amount of time.

This simple trick can save you some serious health problems!
