Ambulance Driver, Queen Elizabeth, in 1945

Most people think of Queen Elizabeth as the adorable little lady monarch with white hair, extremely bright clothing and a matching bag. But what many don’t realize is that, despite becoming queen at 25, she was able quite capable of doing her part. This photo was taken when she was just 18 years old, after pestering her father enough that he finally allowed her to join the army. She served as an ambulance driver for the Auxiliary Territorial Service in WWII, and aside from driving an ambulance, she also trained as a truck driver and a mechanic. Suffice to say she probably knows how to run a country and fix your car!
