If you stocked up on milk and it’s about to expire, don’t throw it away! Maybe you have an extra gallon of milk in your fridge that you won’t be able to drink before it expires. If so, you should know that you can freeze it! My Heavenly Recipes shared their tips and tricks on how to freeze a gallon of milk and properly thaw it.

Here is how to do it!

1. First, you want to remove roughly one cup of milk from the gallon, as the gallon will expand in the freezer. You definitely don’t want the gallon to explode in your freezer!

2. If you often use milk in small quantities, like for coffee or tea, try filling an ice tray with milk! Fill each ice tray slot with milk and freeze for a few hours. Once they are set up, put the cubes into a ziplock bag to store in the freezer for a longer period of time. It is then much easier to just grab one cube and thaw it.

3. Remember to never freeze milk in a glass container. As the temperature change from cold to warm can cause the milk to expand and crack the glass.

You can freeze your milk for up to 3-months!

How to thaw milk correctly!

1. You will want to remove the milk from the freezer 1 to 2 days before you actually want to use it.

2. Fill a large bowl with water and submerge the frozen milk for 30-minutes.

You can also freeze other dairy products such as chocolate milk, cheeses, cream cheese, yogurt, butter, and sour cream. It is always best to wrap them in a plastic bag to keep the freezer burn away.
