Another of the popular terrier dogs for seniors, the “Yorkies” can live up to 20 years of age making them loyal lifetime companions. They are a small breed, ideally about 7 pounds only. These dogs developed in the 19th century in Yorkshire, England. They do well in apartments or assisted-living centers because of their low-maintenance and calm temperament. Excellent lap dogs as well. They do well for seniors, and people with medical issues. They are loving and devoted companions. However, Yorkies do bark a lot. It is their natural instinct to bark at every noise, or when they are excited.
