In a quirky and heartwarming tale from Canada, a lonely donkey’s newfound love for a yoga ball has not only lifted his spirits but also sparked an outpouring of generosity from across the country. Earl Grey, once a sad and solitary donkey, found unexpected joy in a simple, bouncy ball—and now he has more yoga balls than he knows what to do with.

A lonely donkey’s new best friend

In July 2024, a rescue donkey named Earl Grey was brought to A Home for Hooves Farm Sanctuary, a shelter in Duncan, British Columbia, after his owner passed away. This donkey had spent most of his adult life alone—a heartbreaking reality for a herd animal, whose natural instincts are social and communal. As Michelle Singleton, the shelter’s owner, recalled, “His original name was Eeyore, which kind of tells you he was a sad, lonely donkey.”

At first, attempts to socialize Earl Grey with other animals didn’t go as planned. His loneliness seemed unshakeable, and he remained despondent. But then, a simple yoga ball changed everything. Earl became captivated by the ball, and soon, he couldn’t stop playing with it. “The excitement was just pure joy for him,” Michelle said, “He just had the time of his life, he had so much fun.” From that moment on, Earl and the yoga ball were inseparable. He would push it around, bite it, and even kick it across his paddock every single day.

The yoga ball’s untimely deflation

But as with all good things, Earl’s joy eventually hit a snag—his beloved yoga ball deflated. For a moment, it seemed like Earl’s happiness had deflated too. However, Michelle Singleton wasn’t about to let this blow to Earl’s spirit go unanswered. She reached out to the community with a heartfelt plea: could anyone help by donating their old, unused yoga balls?

The response was overwhelming.

Canadians rally for Earl Grey

Donations poured in from across British Columbia, and soon Earl was surrounded by a colorful collection of more than 40 yoga balls. It was like a dream come true for the donkey. “He was like a kid in a candy store,” Michelle said, describing his excitement as he explored the new balls that arrived at the shelter. With so many new toys, Earl was back in business—playing nonstop and living his best life.

But the donations didn’t stop there. Along with the influx of yoga balls, three rescue donkeys were brought to the shelter, offering Earl the companionship he had been missing for so long. After years of isolation, he finally had a chance to be part of a herd again—a dream that Michelle had been working toward for a while.

Earl’s slow journey to herd life

At first, Earl struggled to fit in. Having been alone for so long, he didn’t quite know how to behave with his new companions. It took about six months for him to learn how to “do the donkey thing”—socializing and figuring out the rules of herd life. But, with time, he started to bond with the other donkeys. And as for his yoga balls? Well, let’s just say he’s now the star player in his very own “ball team.”

The story of Earl Grey is a powerful reminder of the impact of community, compassion, and a little bit of creativity. While the yoga balls may have started as a playful distraction, they ended up being a catalyst for Earl’s emotional transformation. He’s now not only part of a herd but also in possession of a mountain of yoga balls to play with.

What we can learn from Earl’s journey

Earl’s story has a deeper message: it shows the power of addressing an animal’s emotional needs, not just their physical ones. Rescues and shelters that take time to understand the behavior and social needs of the animals they care for often see extraordinary changes in the creatures they help. Earl’s case highlights how something as simple as a yoga ball—something many people may have lying around unused—can have a massive, positive impact on an animal’s life.

Additionally, it serves as a reminder that sometimes, even the smallest acts of kindness—like donating an old toy—can make a world of difference. Whether it’s a yoga ball or something else entirely, you never know how one small gesture can change the life of an animal in need.

As for Earl? Well, he’s living proof that no matter how lonely one may feel, a little joy—and a lot of yoga balls—can go a long way in restoring happiness and companionship. Now, all that’s left to see is whether the new donkeys can keep up with Earl’s impressive ball skills. Will he lead them to victory in an inter-herd game? Only time will tell!
