Know The Difference Between A Stye And A Chalazion

A chalazion is another type of eyelid bump that usually occurs farther up on the eyelid and is often mistaken for a stye. It mimics a stye in appearance for the first few days but then turns into an enlarged, hard, round bump later on. A chalazion can start as a clogged oil gland in the eyelid or an internal stye. It may not be apparent at first because it is normally painless, but when it gets bigger, the affected eyelid can become red, swollen, and tender to touch. It can also affect your vision. Unless treated, a chalazion may last for several months, and you may need a doctor to drain it.
It is important to distinguish a stye from a chalazion before you begin proper treatment. You may also want to determine if the bump is due to a different health issue or infection. Sometimes, a bump that appears like a stye may be caused by high cholesterol, other bacterial or viral infections, or in rare cases, skin cancer.
