Almost every single person can say that they’ve had a cold sore at least once in their life. Usually caused by the herpes simplex virus or HSV, these blisters or small lesions appear on the mouth or around it. They can be very painful, highly contagious and quite irritating too. Cold sores are also called fever blisters, and they can take anywhere between two to three weeks to go away.
While there are a few over-the-counter medications you can use to help them heal and go away faster, take a look at these home remedies that will also help you get rid of cold sores.
1. Ice Pack
This might sound simple, but an ice pack could actually get your cold sore on the road to recovery, and quite quickly at that. Since cold sores tend to swell up and turn red from inflammation, an ice pack that’s placed directly on it can help lessen the swelling, flattening the sore and helping reduce the irritation. Simply take a couple of ice cubes and put them inside an ice pack, or wrap them up in a thin kitchen towel. Then place the ice pack directly on the blister for a few minutes around three times a day. You can also put some Vaseline on the sore after to help lessen the chances of an add on bacterial infection as well.
