14. Perforation of the GI Tract

Radiopedia

Gastrointestinal perforation occurs when a hole forms all the way through the stomach, large intestine, or small intestine. It can be due to various reasons including appendicitis and diverticulitis, as well as due to trauma like a knife wound or a gunshot wound. A hole in your GI tract can lead to peritonitis, which is the inflammation of the membrane that lines the abdominal cavity and is caused by the entry of bacteria, bile, stomach acid, partially digested food, and stool enter the abdominal cavity. When you have a hole in your GI tract, your abdomen will feel very tender and may stick outward further than normal and feel hard to the touch. GP is a life-threatening medical emergency that should be brought to the doctor immediately, especially if the hole is caused by trauma.
If the bloating in your stomach doesn’t seem to be caused by any of these things, or is caused by several of them at a time, be sure to make an appointment to see your doctor and provide him or her with as much information as possible about your condition.
