Excessive gas and bloating, which may be accompanied by abdominal discomfort, burping, flatulence, and a feeling of fullness, is typically caused by many things, such as eating too fast or too much, eating fatty foods, eating foods high in fiber (e.g. leafy greens, asparagus, beans, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, and cauliflower), drinking too much soda or carbonated drinks, indigestion, swallowing air from chewing gum or drinking through a straw, lactose intolerance, gluten intolerance, intestinal disorders, pregnancy, and abdominal adhesions due to past surgery(s) in the abdominal region. The average person passes gas between 10 and 20 times a day, and while it’s normal to pass gas up to 25 times a day, excessive gas and bloating can be a sign of colorectal cancer. They may also be late symptoms of this type of cancer caused by a partial obstruction of a tumor in the colon. Bloating may also occur once the cancer has metastasized to nearby lymph nodes.
