4. Alternating Diarrhea and Constipation

The Economic Times

While constipation-predominant IBS affects up to 50% of patients and diarrhea-predominant IBS affects up to 20% of patients, there are another 20% that complain of alternating diarrhea and constipation. While it’s normal at times to have diarrhea, as well as constipation at different times, when they occur at the same time, this is a signal that you may be dealing with IBS mixed, also known as alternating or IBS-A. Many patients that are dealing with IBS-A complain of even more belly pain than those suffering from IBS-D or IBS-C. If you notice this happening to you, be sure to consult with a doctor to see if IBS is the culprit.
