Some of these popularly known laundry hacks and old wives’ tales do not work and are a waste of your time. We are giving you ten laundry myths that have been passed down from generation to generation with some real information on how to actually make laundry easier.

1. Adding More Detergent Cleans Clothes Even More

When it comes to laundry detergent, LESS is more. Putting in too much detergent creates excessive suds that just redeposit soil into the clothing. Be sure to follow the measuring lines in liquid detergent caps because they are there for a good reason. You can even enhance those lines by using a permanent marker so it won’t be difficult to see when other family members do the laundry. This makes your laundry come out cleaner, and you will save laundry detergent, softener and money at the end of the day.

If you use a front load washer and smell the detergent coming from your machine, then this a sign that you put too much detergent and fabric softener.

2. Doing The Laundry With Hot Water Kills More Germs

Sad to say, using hot water in your laundry does not kill germs and bacteria. When washing the clothes and bed sheets of someone sick with other apparel, the water temperature does not help in killing these germs, in fact you should not mix laundry of a person who is ill with other people’s clothing.

Chlorine bleach, pine oil or a type of phenolic disinfectant is the solution to sanitize and eradicate all germs and bacteria from the laundry and washer.

3. Remove Ink Spots With Hair Spray

This myth off removing ink spots with the use of hair spray started in the 1950’s with good reason. The alcohol found in the components of hairspray is what removes stains, but this does not apply to the hairsprays in today’s market. Aerosol products in the 50’s had totally different ingredients from what is being sold now. Many formulas in the market no longer contain alcohol and can actually cause more stains if sprayed onto laundry.

Plain old rubbing alcohol is the best solution to remove ink stains. If you’re dealing with an older stain, this may require repeat treatments for it to completely disappear.

4. Dry Cleaning Is 100% Dry

While the fact that water isn’t used when clothes are being dry cleaned, there are other fluids that are part of the dry cleaning process, therefore this information is false. Perchloroethylene and other solvents are used when dry cleaning laundry. Even green dry cleaners include liquid carbon dioxide and other silicone fluids in their laundry process. The secret to good dry cleaning is choosing the best cleaner conveniently close to your home.

5. Remove All Stains From The Front Part Of Your Laundry

Removing stains from the front side of the laundry by rubbing them away seems like a great idea, although turning it inside out and removing it from there is an even better idea. When you treat a stain on the back part of the fabric, you are pushing the stain out of the thousands of fabric fibers, instead of rubbing it even deeper.

6. Dryer Lint Is Not A Big Deal

This information is highly untrue because having an excessive amount of dryer link makes it longer for your clothes to dry, which in turn increases your energy bills. You will have a good amount of lint on your clothing, and there will be a possibility of causing a fire in the laundry room.

Your laundry routine can be safer by exerting just a little more effort. Emptying the lint trap on the dryer should be done every time you use it. All you have to do is check the lint filter before you switch it on.

Doing a yearly maintenance of cleaning the duct work and possibly upgrading it is a good routine. This will save you money in the long run, and even possible the lives of your family.

7. Add Ground Coffee to Laundry Water to Keep Clothing Black

This myth hasn’t been on our radar since recently when people got convinced that adding a cup of black coffee you prevent dark jeans from fading. For this to happen, you would need your washer to be filled with espresso for a noticeable difference.

Coffee definitely adds color to fabric, but it does not prevent clothing from fading.

8. Adding Chlorine Bleach to Strengthen Detergent Powder

Combining chlorine bleach with detergent will actually cancel each other out and will leave your clothes looking dull and stained. In order to brighten and whiten your fabrics, wait five minutes after the wash cycle before adding diluted bleach. This will allow enough time for the enzymes found in laundry detergents to do their job.

Another trick for whitening is to add baking soda to your chlorine bleach solution. Try it out!

9. High Heat in the Dryer Causes Clothes to Shrink

There are various reasons as to why clothes shrink, such as the poor decisions the manufacturers make in order to cut costs.

A solution to avoid shrinkage of clothing is to remove them from the dryer when they are still slightly damp and leave them to air dry. Shrinkage often occurs because of the lack of moisture found in the fibers from over drying.

10. Have You Met The Sock Monster?

Most missing socks are not, in fact eaten by the monster that lives in your dryer. Neither do they get trapped and disappear in the machine.

Check behind your washer and dryer to see if any socks have fallen during the process of clothing leaving the hamper to go to the laundry room. Another area where they may be found is inside the pant leg because of static electricity in the dryer.

A good solution to this is buying identical socks so that they all match!
