69. World’s Most Expensive Carpet Sold at Auction- $4.4 Million

This 18 by 19 foot Louis XV Savonnerie Carpet was made for none other than Louis XV’s Chateau de la Mouette, back between the years 1740 to 1750. It was eventually bought at auction in New York in the year 2000 for $4,406,000 by one of America’s biggest designer names, Karl Lagerfeld. He put it up on the wall of his mansion, and it was said to be one of his most favorite possessions, which means a lot since Lagerfeld was known to collect art. The carpet itself was one of three that were designed by none other than ornament painter Pierre-Josse Perrot.
