If you are a coffee drinker, you know that feeling you get when you may have just a little too much coffee for one day. Your anxiety rises, you may feel jittery and a tad disoriented. It happens to the best of us. But just how much coffee in one day is too much?

Up to 400 milligrams (mg) of caffeine a day appears to be safe for most healthy adults. That’s roughly the amount of caffeine in four cups of brewed coffee, 10 cans of soda or two “energy shot” drinks. Keep in mind that the actual caffeine content in beverages varies widely, especially among energy drinks. (Stick to coffee, energy drinks are nasty – nasty!).

If you are pregnant, you will want to have no more than 200mg of coffee in a 24-hour period.

This is what can happen to the body if you drink four or more coffees in one day:

  • Headache
  • Insomnia
  • Nervousness
  • Irritability
  • Frequent urination or inability to control urination
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Muscle tremors

Too much coffee can also effect your sleep, even if you don’t consume caffeine late in the day. Having too much coffee during the day, can cause sleeplessness later – as the high caffeine levels in your body can stick around for a while!

As adults, we drink coffee and most of will be just fine with doing so, without any serious health problems. But if you ever feel like you are consuming too much coffee, you most certainly want to cut back and stick to a comfortable level of caffeine that feels good to you!
