Cesar Calle from Weston, Florida, gave his wife, Monica the greatest gift ever on their 23rd wedding anniversary. His kidney.

For nearly ten years, Monica has been battling with Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD), which is the fourth leading cause of kidney failure. Because of this, for the last two-and-a-half years, she has had to perform dialysis on herself every night. Between going to work and taking care of their three children, she knows that every night at 9:30 pm, she has to start her dialysis to give herself enough time to be able to get up the next day, and go to work.

Cesar has been wanting to give Monica one of his kidneys and finally, he received the good news from the Transplant Institute that they were a match. Dr. Juan Arenas, the medical team leader on their case says that it is very unusual to find a kidney match between spouses.

The doctors at the Memorial Regional Hospital warned the couple that this would be an arduous operation that would last 2.5 hours and it might not even be successful. The couple’s immediate family and relatives were all hoping for good news, and thankfully it was the first successful live donor kidney transplant performed at the Hollywood Hospital, where Monica works.

After a few days post surgery, the couple was finally able to go home and return to normalcy. Monica continues to improve as the days go by.

“Monica and I would kid around sometimes and say, you know, we’re a good match. We’re a perfect match, but you know what? Everything here is a perfect match because it seems as if the universe aligned together and brought us to this point.” Says Cesar about the very unusual kidney match.

“If it wasn’t for my husband who like I said before, generously donated a kidney, I would not have a second opportunity at life.” Says Monica.

Now, the couple gets to live, travel and do more things together with their children; and they are still very much so, a match.
