Asking the partner of your dreams to marry you is one of those life-altering moments you and your future spouse will remember for the rest of your lives.

It’s an exciting feeling when you first realize your partner might be The One.

You start secretly planning out your life with them in your head. You start thinking of buying homes, raising kids, and owning pets. It’s all good stuff.

But how could we not? It’s a really big deal!

Before you propose, however, there are some definite things you need to know first.

Scroll down for our top 5 things you need to know before you propose!

Hold On, Before You Propose

Despite all the mind-altering excitement and feelings, don’t get carried away yet.

Nearly half of all marriages fail, but yours doesn’t have to!

Just because we fall in love too quickly and act impulsively doesn’t mean it won’t work out! Mostly, marriages fall apart because they’re hard work, and to some people, it’s not worth it.

However, when you find the right person, it’s all worth it! Few things in life are as rewarding as a successful marriage.

  1. Know Where Their Head’s At

First, if only to protect your ego, it’s a good idea to know where your partner’s head is at before you propose.

There’s nothing worse than awkward silence and a pitying expression after popping the question!

Make sure you know your significant other believes in marriage and is ready to take that step. You don’t have to come right out and say it, just plant a couple of seeds and see what comes up.

  1. Clear It With the Folks

Depending on your partner’s relationship with their parents, you’ll probably want to have a chat with them before you propose.

Whether you believe it’s outdated or not, dad’s have a thing about giving their child’s hand away in marriage. Asking your partner’s folks for permission to propose to their child will set the mood for your entire relationship with them.

  1. Plan the Perfect Moment

Part of the magic most people feel during a proposal is the mood that has been methodically set beforehand.

Take your time planning the perfect moment before you propose. Not your perfect moment, your partner’s.  For example, if you like baseball, it doesn’t mean you should propose to them at the big game.

Propose in a way that speaks to their heart.

  1. Know Their Style (and Their Ring Size)

You need to know what you’re getting into.

Know how to communicate with your partner, know their love language.

Additionally, know their style. Engagement rings are not all created equal. There are different cuts, different sizes, and all sorts of styles. New age rings are amazing, but some prefer more traditional styles.

Know your partner inside and out before you propose. That includes knowing what style of ring to get them and what size it should be!

  1. Know if Your Goals Align

Finally, for your lives to flow together, you must have similar life goals.

For example, if they want to travel the world and you hate traveling, perhaps you’ll need to find a happy medium to compromise!

While you shouldn’t sweat the small stuff like being a dog person or a cat person, the big stuff can create strife in the future. Make sure you and your partner are on the same page before you propose.
