Lifts for TV appeared not so long ago and until recently, they have been an indicator of luxury. Not everybody could afford the purchase of an item that costs several thousand and doesn’t belong to the necessities.

Now, these things have changed significantly. If you would like to have motorized TV lifts but cannot afford a complete installation, you can do it yourself. The price reduces several times, and the design can be adjusted to the interior to the smallest details.

All you need to do is to buy the needed items and assemble them into the TV lifts of your own design. To do so, you will need:

  • A 12v actuator or better the entire system;
  • Plywood for the mounting plate;
  • A door if you want to hide your TV completely when not in use;
  • Tools;

How to Choose an Actuator

For TV lifts, you need to find a correct actuator. For your project, a 12v actuator is an optimal choice. Check the weight of the TV and the TV lift. The actuator shall be able to lift at least this weight + 50% more. You can ask a specialist to calculate the capacity of an actuator for you. Reliable manufacturers provide their clients with such an option.

Measure the distance at which your TV shall be moved. Add at least ¾ of an inch. This is the minimum stroke of your actuator.

Is It Worth Getting an Entire System?

You might consider purchasing the entire system, including a switch and remote control. You need them in any case. If you order them in a set with the actuator, it will save time and help to avoid errors. Such a purchase also will allow you to save on the services of an electrician. You will be able to install everything on your own.

Once all the elements are ready, install the actuator. Use the nuts and screws in the set.

Now, Install the Mounting Plate

The mounting plate will support your TV and separate it from the actuator brake. You can use any material for it. In most cases, plywood is used. Your mounting plate shall be a little bit bigger than the TV. Leave some space behind the TV for cabling and wires.

Pain the mounting plate if needed. You might consider installing a door to open it when you are going to use the TV and to close when the TV needs to be hidden.

Start Using It!

Test the entire installation. Let it move completely up and down. Adjust the components if needed. Once everything functions perfectly, install the TV. Hide cables and wires in the place that you have left for them. Now, test the TV lifts to make sure everything works impeccably and neither the TV nor any other installation component gets tangled in wires. Once done, your TV lifts are ready to be used and impress your friends and family.
