It’s not every day that a hidden masterpiece turns up in your backyard. But for one couple, a casual barn renovation led to an unexpected discovery that left them speechless—literally. A 10-foot painting of the crucifixion of Jesus, tucked away behind a pile of plywood, was uncovered in a barn in Cornwall, UK, and the revelation has stirred up the quiet town of Lostwithiel.

The scene was set last October when Sarah Worne and her husband purchased an acre of land near the picturesque town. The property came with a barn, packed to the brim with old materials—including 30 sheets of plywood that had to be removed. What they didn’t expect, however, was to unearth a massive work of religious art—one that hadn’t seen the light of day for nearly 70 years.

“I was pushing the sheets back to my husband and I am passing them back to him and as I pull forward the last sheet to pass it to Mike he couldn’t see what was behind it and I just said ‘Jesus!’” Sarah recalls. “And he said ‘Why, what have you found?’ and I said ‘No, I mean it is Jesus.’”

A Hidden Treasure from the Past

The painting itself is no ordinary find. It’s a striking depiction of the crucifixion, with Jesus on the cross, his face bare and serene, draped only in a simple white cloth. On one side of the cross stands a woman in blue, likely Mary, and on the other, a man dressed in dark colors, probably the disciple John. Measuring 10 feet tall, the artwork is shaped like a cross, fitting perfectly into the subject matter it depicts.

Despite the conditions of the barn, the piece has remained in surprisingly good condition. The only signs of aging are a few cracks and some minor mold growth, which doesn’t detract from its historical value. Sarah, who is also a former art teacher, couldn’t help but marvel at the painting’s state. “There is very little damage but it would be lovely to see it cleaned so the colors can shine,” she notes.

A Mysterious Signature

As they investigated further, Sarah noticed a faint signature on the back of the painting: ‘Teresa Fuller 1951-1952.’ While little is known about the artist, the discovery has sparked a local quest to uncover the story behind this hidden gem. Sarah is hoping that residents of Lostwithiel may hold the key to unlocking more about the artist’s identity.

“I was also hoping that the people in the town of Lostwithiel will be able to see it and give me some history about it,” Sarah said. She is particularly eager for the community’s insight. “I am intrigued with the story and with the journey that it is going to take me on and who I am going to meet along the way.”

Sarah also hopes that the painting will be displayed in the town’s Church of Saint Bartholomew, where it can be appreciated by the community and preserved for future generations. Thanks to the efforts of Reverend Sheila Bawden, the church has agreed to house the artwork, where it will now stand as an iconic symbol of local history.

An Unexpected Journey

Sarah’s journey with the painting doesn’t end with its safe relocation to the church. “I’m excited to see where this takes me,” she says. “Who knows what I’ll discover as I dig deeper into the history of this painting. Maybe I’ll even meet someone who remembers it or knows the artist personally.”

This fascinating discovery not only sheds light on a forgotten piece of history but also serves as a reminder of how art can be found in the most unexpected places. Whether it’s a barn in the middle of Cornwall or an old attic, treasures from the past have a way of revealing themselves when we least expect it.

Tips for Discovering Hidden Art

If you ever find yourself in the midst of a renovation or cleanup, here are a few things to keep in mind:

1. Inspect Old Items Carefully: Don’t dismiss the value of old, seemingly insignificant objects. A piece of wood or an old canvas might be hiding something incredible beneath layers of dust.

2. Know the History: If you find an unusual artwork or item, always check for signatures, dates, or any identifying marks that might shed light on its origins.

3. Consult Experts: If you stumble upon a potentially valuable discovery, reaching out to local historians, art experts, or even community members can help uncover the backstory.

4. Preserve the Piece: Even if it’s not a masterpiece, every piece of art or historical artifact has value. Try to preserve it in its current state as much as possible, and consider professional restoration if needed.

Who knows, the next piece of hidden history could be just around the corner—or behind a pile of plywood!
