Michael Daus was vacationing with his family in Yellowstone National Park recently when he captured a rare encounter between a grizzly bear and bison — on video.

Daus and his family were checking out the sites at the Grand Prismatic Overlook and they had no clue what they were about to witness as they walked back to their vehicle in the overlook’s parking area.

As Daus made his way to the parking area, he and his family noticed a healthy looking grizzly bear sparring with a young bison. The bear and bison made a few attempts to attack one another, but the grizzly ultimately gains control of the bison by attacking from the back.

I lived in Yellowstone National Park for 3-years and although I have seen my fair share of bison and grizzly bears, I have never seen them fight one another.

It is worth mentioning that when visiting Yellowstone National Park, the animals are in fact — wild. It is not a zoo and you should always keep a safe distance from all wildlife. When I lived there, I can’t tell you how many times I heard tourists ask silly questions, such as ‘When do you feed the animals? or ‘Can we take pictures with the animals?. Obviously, there is no feeding of the animals and secondly, no, you can not take pictures ‘with’ the animals.

Warning: The video is graphic!
