Cuba has gone through some heartbreaking and astonishing times during its history. One such story is that of Los Frikis, a Cuban punk community that emerged in the ’80s.
Los Frikis was a lot like other punk movements around the world happening during that time, except in Cuba, they were not well received…they were persecuted. Many were rejected by their families, harassed, arrested, and forced to do manual labor.
To escape their oppression, hundreds of people within the punk community injected themselves with the HIV Virus. Not much was known about the virus at the time, but those with the virus were able to stay in special shelters and receive free food, medical care and safety.
