The world’s coldest national capital is also one of the most polluted, with children being evacuated from the city because of severely toxic air conditions. Families take their young children to rural areas in Mongolia or to nearby countries to escape the poisonous air in Ulaanbaatar. The quality of air gets worse during the winter months when people burn unrefined coal in their homes to stay warm, releasing hazardous particles into the atmosphere. It is worse in the northern districts where families living in gers, traditional nomadic yurts, burn anything they can find just to stay warm. As the city rapidly grows and industrializes and the population expands, pollution worsens, and children are exposed to harmful air pollutants. In a developing city like Ulaanbaatar, a startling 98% of children under age five are vulnerable against the dangerous levels of fine particulate matter that can travel inside their respiratory tract and cause various health problems.
