You could have probably gone your whole life without knowing this dirty little secret and been just fine. But what’s the fun in that?

A new study claims that nearly half of all Americans admit to having worn the same underwear for multiple days in a row. Eew.

A recent survey conducted by the clothing and underwear company ‘Tommy John’, surveyed 2,000 people, asking how often they wear the same pair of undies…well…the result came back and a whopping 45% claimed to wear the same pair of underwear for at least two days in a row.

As if that wasn’t ‘eek’ enough, 13% reported to have worn the same pair of skivvies for a whole week straight! YUCK!

“Since underwear hygiene is typically kept behind closed doors, we were curious to see the habits of Americans — and air their dirty laundry,” the company wrote in its blog.

The survey results also told Tommy John folks that men were two and half times likely to admit they have worn their underwear for consecutive days.

Here are a few more interesting takeaways from the survey.

46% stated they hang on to their underwear for at least one full  year. While 38% claimed they have no clue how long they have owned their oldest pair of stinkers.

Oh, and by the way…the study was split evenly between men and women, so there would be no confusion as to which gender is more hygienically conscious.

Tommy John recommends that people discard old underwear every 6-12 months. In addition to that statement, they also state one should not wear underwear for more than one full day.

It’s pretty much common knowledge and has actually been backed by science, that one should not wear the same pair of underwear for consecutive days. This helps decrease the buildup of bacteria or yeast…especially if you are an active and sweaty person.
