There is a new trend among newly married/engaged couples, and we are not sure what to think about it. On one hand, it’s sort of cool, on the other hand, it looks a bit uncomfortable.

They are called ‘engagement piercings’ and it’s where couples are replacing traditional wedding rings for finger piercings. You are basically trading in the expensive, traditional wedding rings for a cheaper, more painful experience.

Love hurts, but this may be going a bit too far!

Engagement piercings are basically just dermal piercings, as whatever you decided to have a body piercer shove into your finger — usually a dermal anchor — just goes right under the skin. Diamond dermal piercings and micro dermal anchors are also available. If you can dream up a way to mangle your ring finger in the name of love, the engagement ring piercing trend will find a way to make it happen.

The jewelry sits on the surface of the skin, making it look like there are gems or beads on the body.

There can be some complications however…

The British Association of Dermatologists is one of the UK’s leading organisations for skin medicine. A spokesperson told BBC Three, “If the piercing is not deep enough there is a risk of it moving, known as migration. If it is too deep the skin begins to grow over the piercing, known as embedding. Other risks include inflammation, scarring and infection – particularly if it is on the hands, as is the case with these particular piercings.”

So just think of that prior to deciding to pierce your fingers in the name of love!
