Schadenfreude — literally “harm joy”, is the experience of joy that comes from witnessing someone else screwing up. It is a complex emotion, where rather than feeling sympathy towards someone’s misfortunes, you tend to feel joyful feelings, and take pleasure from watching someone else fail. This emotion is displayed more in children than in adults, however we have to admit that we do get a little kick out of seeing celebrities act like unscripted goofballs every once in a while. It helps us remember they are human!
