Survivors burning makeshift effigies of the Union Carbide and Dow Chemicals companies on a protest held during the anniversary of the tragedy that claimed over 15,000 lives in December of 1984. Though the cause of the gas leak remains under debate, the effects of the toxic gas has caused irreparable damage to majority of over 500,000 people who were exposed. Residents have suffered either major, and permanent, or minor injuries, with cerebral palsy, blindness, learning difficulties, growth retardation, and down’s syndrome, among the common effects.
