Otto Lilienthal pictured in 1896 in his glider which took off from a man-made hill called “Aviation Hill” or “Fly Hill” in Lichterfelde, just outside of Berlin. The German engineer, who was also a student of aerodynamics, constructed gliders inspired by birds which made him achieve the first controlled manned glider flight in 1891. He kept on improving his designs over the next few years, from gliding 80 feet to more than 800 feet by 1893.
