Anyone that’s ever tried to rent an apartment in New York knows how expensive that can be, even when it’s in the outer suburbs. And if you happen to be students or newly grads, money becomes even more of an issue, for most at least. For three roommates sharing an apartment in New Paltz, N.Y., they were living on a budget as most college kids do, so picking out fancy furniture and tons of brand-new appliances just wasn’t viable. But when they picked up a couch for $20 from a nearby discount store, they could have never known what was lurking underneath all that old upholstery.
