Learning to read at an early age may also be a sign of being gifted as the brain needs to be developed sufficiently before this skill can be learned. This can be compared to walking in children, where you can teach them how to do it, but if their muscles are not strong enough, they wouldn’t be able to. So, children who are able to read well at the age of five after initially being taught can be considered advanced as it takes more than memorization but also comprehension of the meaning of the words, sentences, paragraphs, and the story as a whole. While you can argue that it doesn’t make them intelligent right away, it does make them smarter due to the accumulation of what they have read.
