Pneumonia is described as an infection of the lungs where the air sacs, or alveoli as they are otherwise known, end up filling up with pus or fluid. Cases of pneumonia can be considered either mild enough to handle at home with medication, or so severe that you’ll need to go to the hospital. This type of infection can attack anyone regardless of age, but statistics show that ‘infants younger than 2 and people over age 65 are at higher risk’ because their immune systems are weaker than others.
Pneumonia is caused by fungus infections, bacteria, viruses, and in very rare cases, parasites. More often than not, it’s also highly contagious and easily transmitted to others. And while patients can also get pneumonia in either one or both lungs, the manifestations are basically the same for most. In fact, some people get it and don’t even know that they have it. Some might think they just have a cough or others might think that they’re just a bit breathless and tired, when in fact, they are already sick. These signs can also vary depending on what kind of issue is causing the pneumonia, a person’s age, and their overall health.
If you want to know more about this disease, here are 13 symptoms of pneumonia.

1. Persistent Cough

Generally, one symptom that is common amongst people that have pneumonia is that they have a cough. Of course this cough can be mild to severe, but when accompanied by yellow or greenish mucus, more so when there’s accompanying blood as well, there’s a chance that they are suffering from pneumonia. The cough can be moderate, acute, persistent and leave you breathless, depending on how bad the case may be. Of course just because someone has a cough doesn’t automatically mean that they have pneumonia, but when accompanied with other symptoms, they should always seek out a medical professional immediately.
