Most people do not consider the possibility that sports superstars are brainy, particularly in American football where rough and tough is the name of the game, not smarts. But, you may be surprised to know that there are some real geniuses out there. Now to be honest, not many NFL players took an IQ exam. However, players are required to take a Wonderlic exam aside from the routine physical exams given. The Wonderlic is an exam of 50 questions to be answered in just 12 minutes. It is similar to an IQ test with questions that get harder as you progress. Some teams consider this exam very important, and have set standards for the average, above-average, and exceptional scores. To date, only one player ever scored a perfect 50/50, and on the opposite side of the spectrum, only one player scored a 1/50. Each year, about 2.5 million job applicants in any line of work, take the Wonderlic (less than 1% score 45 and above). For NFL players, the average would be around 24/50, while for chemists it’s 31/50, and bank tellers average 22/50.
While the Wonderlic is the IQ exam ( a score of 20 in the Wonderlic equates to an IQ of 100 which is average) for NFL players, it is not the only gauge of how intelligent one can be. Their college SATs and GPAs are also taken into consideration. This list provides insights into some of the players’ intelligence levels, with those who scored at least 45 on the Wonderlic considered real geniuses.
