Five months ago, the smallest, tiniest baby was born in a Tokyo Hospital in Japan. Premature at only 24 weeks, which is a massive 16 weeks earlier than normal births occur, this little miracle weighed only 9.45 oz (268g) which is record breaking! Because of the complications that occurred during his mother’s pregnancy, an emergency c-section had to be done for any chance to save the infant, and thus the world’s possibly smallest baby entered this world.

So fragile and light, he could easily be cuddled up in a pair of hands and be cozy, and his size and weight were being compared to an onion. Being born too early, the chances of survival was close to none, that even the baby’s mother had doubts that her son was going to survive. Thankfully, after being under intensive care for 5 months, this ‘mini miracle’ just proved that the toughest of men aren’t the biggest and strongest, it is the other way around. When this little champion finally grew to weigh 7 lbs. (3.2 kg), the hospital finally released him to the care of his parents and was free to go home for the first time.

On the average, the weight of newborn babies ranges from 5 to 8 lbs. (2.5 -4 kg), and with the now 7 lb. ‘mini miracle’ baby, his family, along with the doctors that nursed him in Keio University Hospital

are happy to say that he is out of the danger zone. The smallest infant the world has ever seen to be born has survived!

Previously, the smallest babies in record, one boy and one girl, were both born in Germany. The baby boy was born at 9.6 oz (274g), while the girl at 8.9 oz (252g). The little girl is still the remaining title holder for the record of smallest baby girl to be born and survived.
