Clothing is an essential part of our needs and to maintain it we use products such as mothballs or naphthalene to get rid of moths and other fiber insects to protect it. Like any products, proper use should be paramount to ensure safety. Conversely, the chemical components in mothballs cause reversible health effects such as headaches, nausea, eye and nose irritation and cough. Interestingly, exposure to naphthalene can cause more serious effects including hemolytic anemia. Mothballs slowly turn from solid balls to toxic vapor. Suffice to say, when you smell mothballs you are inhaling the insecticide. Thus, it is recommended to place mothballs in tightly sealed containers with punctured covers alongside your clothing materials. The vapors will remain inside the containers and is still effective in killing the fiber insects.
